[DRAFT Version]

Due to some requests I'll start this comparison about three major Control panels: Plesk, Cpanel (WHM) and Direct Admin (DA)

I have experience as end-user- and reseller-level handling all three panels. Due to the fact I like Plesk the most I'll try to explain my assesment for each comparison.

Navigation:
Both Plesk and Cpanel clearly state the path in your navigation breadcrumb urls. ex: Home > Subpage > Sub-subpage
Direct admin tends to only show the sub-subpage which is not really handy.

Due to the breadcrumbs you can easily navigate back and forth in your path to your current page. It is a pitty Plesk doesn't like multiple tabs to be opened and can produce errors or stop serving the right pages when you are multi tabbing Sad

Plesk uses the hierarchy path to navigate, also between customers/clients and domains.
Cpanel uses a selectbox on which you can select your desired customer ( there is a table list on your WHM ).
DA also shows you a table yet requires you to log in a that user using a [LOGIN] button. No username/passw. needed. This is a disadvantage when tabbing if you want to see both your reseller stuff and your client stuff.

Phpmyadmin:
All three control panels serve phpmyadmin, our favourite webbased database tool.
Plesk gives you instant access via a popop once you are in the domain > DB area of plesk. No DB login needed, however it requires a valid login to be assigned to the DB you want to view in PMA.

Both Cpanel and DA require you to enter the DB credentials, which is, IMHO, a pitty when you are a server admin or reseller.
Cpanel does not allow phpmyadmin to be opened when logged in as a reseller Sad

Skeleton, pre-installed directories:
By default most control panels have a build in skeleton. A skeleton is a set of files and even directories applied to any newly created hosting package on your server. It mostly consists of a index.html page saying that the hosting package is acitive.

The cpanel skeleton is reduced to an index file or no file at all which is great Smile
Plesk on the other hand has a skeleton of a couple of directories ( css, img, test ) and some root files like index.html This is a real waste and takes time when you want to use FTP to delete all those.
Hint: adapt the skeleton package or use the plesk file manager to swiftly delete all those files.
Direct Admin keeps it decent, an index file and some other root files. I dont likt the fact that DA serves its phpmyadmin under www.domain.tld/phpmyadmin.

Hi Ramon,

I know it's been a while since you posted this comparison, but I thought given your focus on WordPress hosting that you might really like our control panel, ServerPilot.

https://serverpilot.io/

Our control panel is built for developers hosting PHP websites on their own cloud servers and VPSes. We're a much better alternative to cPanel or Plesk if you're not a company selling large amounts of shared hosting.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Justin
